Video: GetUp! exclusive interview with Julian Assange

GetUp! is an independent movement to build a progressive Australia and bring participation back into the country's democracy. They support human rights, Julian Assange and WikiLeaks.

GetUp! interviewed Assange, founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, at the Ecuadorian embassy in London in September and have now released the interview as a video.

This was the first face-to-face Australian interview with Assange since he sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy. Many GetUp members had apparently emailed questions that they wanted Assange to answer, and these questions were put to him during the interview... read more and watch video.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: 'No on 37' misleading public

The "No on 37" campaign, opposing the proposition to label GMOs in California, has once again hit trouble for misleading the public. This time from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The latest critique to the "No on 37" campaign comes in the form of a press release from the world's largest organization for food and nutrition professionals, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Indiana farmer taking Monsanto to Supreme Court

Vernon Hugh Bowman, a 74-year-old soybean farmer, will have his day in court against Monsanto in the US Supreme Court next year. Bowman was originally sued by Monsanto Co for alleged patent infringement for the use of a genetically modified soybean crop.

Under the company's licensing contract, farmers can only use the product to harvest one round of crops. However, Monsanto sued Bowman because they say he is at fault for planting a second harvest. However, this second harvest came from commercially-purchased "commodity seeds" from a grain elevator that contained, in part, the Roundup Ready GMO seeds.

Apparently you can sell "second-generation" seeds to grain elevators for use as "commodity seeds," and Monsanto doesn't require that there be any restriction on the sale... read more.

Anti-Jihad ads heading for Washington, DC

In a court ruling, it was decided that anti-Jihad adverts could be displayed in the Washington, DC metro, as has already been done in New York City and San Francisco.

Washington Metro asked for an injunction against the notorious posters, which were scheduled to appear on trains throughout the city from late September, saying they should be delayed indefinitely in the wake of the recent fallout from the "Innocence of Muslims" film.

Venice and Veneto region seeking independence from Italy (video)

First it was Scotland and Catalonia protesting for independence, now the people of Venice and the Veneto area of Italy also want to be separate, free and on their own.

Instead of being saddled with austerity by Rome, Venice wants to be free. Over 70% of residents in the area support the push for independence, according to the latest poll conducted by local newspaper Il Gazzettino, although a previous poll conducted by Corriere della Sera in September found that 80% were in favor.

Protesters gathered in front of the central government building in Veneto, Italy on Saturday, demanding an immediate referendum on the region's independence from Rome.... read more.

A parody video that has gone viral on YouTube is a spoof on Disney princesses, including the Little Mermaid, Belle, Snow White and Cinderella, singing about organic food, vinyl, and poetry against a backdrop of the city of New York.

'No on 37' forced to pull TV ad misrepresenting Stanford University

The group opposing Proposition 37, California's GMO labeling measure, had to pull their first TV ad, after millions of Californians saw it, and do a reshoot.

The reason why the ad was pulled? According to the LA Times, the ad identified one Henry Miller as a doctor at Stanford University. However, the ad did not disclose that Miller merely serves as a researcher at the Hoover Institute, which is a right-wing think tank at Stanford.

Further, the ad violated Stanford's policy that prohibits consultants from using the university's name for political purposes and officials from Stanford insisted that the ad be re-shot to remove the university buildings in the background... read more.

Jewish & Christian groups respond to anti-Muslim NYC subway ads

Three different groups are responding to the launch of anti-Muslim ads in the New York City subways last month, by hanging posters of their own, right next to the "hate ads."

Digital Journal reported on September 22, that a federal judge had ruled that the city’s transportation authorities could not legally refuse to host anti-Jihad ads in the subway.

The ads, prominently displayed in the subway, read, "In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad" and were placed by the executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), Pamela Geller.... read more.

11-year-old boy finds 30,000-year-old mammoth in northern Russia

A child has made a unique find on Cape Sopochnaya Kagra in northern Russia. Not just a skeleton, but a complete and well-preserved mammoth.

According to scientists, such finds are very rare and the carcass found by Evgeny Salinder is the second-best preserved mammoth ever discovered in the history of paleontology.

Salinder found the mammoth on Cape Sopochnaya Kagra on the Taimyr Peninsula, Krasnoyarsk Region, some 3,000 kilometres north-east of Moscow, and immediately told his parents, who then got in touch with authorities... read more and watch video.
