Russian researchers plan public GMO study on rats

Following the conclusion of the recent study in France on the effects of GMO food on rats, Russia suspended imports of GMO products. Now they are planning their own, more public, study into the effects of feeding GMOs to rats.

Digital Journal recently reported on the trial by scientists from France's Caen University, where they tested the effects of GMO food on rats over a lifetime period of two years. Results showed mammary tumors and organ damage to the rats after they were fed a diet of genetically modified (GM) NK603 maize produced by American chemical giant Monsanto.

Op-Ed: Maps released of GMO crop experiments in Spain

Maps have been released, showing various locations in Spain, where permission was requested in 2010 and 2011 to experiment with genetically modified crops.

While there is no proof that these experiments have gone ahead, it is worthwhile noting the locations and the crops to be grown. Crops in the 2010 experiment map include corn, cotton, potatoes and beetroot.

Spain continues to cultivate 76,000 hectares of MON 810 transgenic maize (corn) on a commercial basis, with no knowledge available currently of the locations of this cultivation. Probably safest to say that any locally grown corn should be boycotted.... read more.

Monsanto convinces Nepal to accept GMO corn — protesters object

Notorious agricultural giant Monsanto has teamed up with the Nepalese government to force GMO seeds on to the country's farmers. Protests in Kathmandu ensued.

RT has reported that the strain of GMO corn which is being forced on the farmers is banned in several EU countries and will be used in Nepal to substitute imports and "boost the starving nation’s maize production."

With corn being one of Nepal's biggest crops, the country still only produces approximately half of what it needs for the feed industry and have to import around 130,000 tons annually to cover this deficit. Even with the imports, over 40% of the Nepalese population is malnourished.

The United States Agency of International Development (USAID) announced in September last year that it wants to create a partnership between the Nepalese Government and Monsanto in order to boost maize production. This is to "lend the starving country a helping hand".... read full article.
