Guatemala volcano eruption forces evacuation of thousands


Around 33,000 people were evacuated in five communities in Guatemala's capital city on Wednesday due to Volcano of Fire eruption.
According to seismologists, the 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) high volcano is billowing our lava and ash nearly 600 meters (2,000 feet) into the sky. They further say that explosions have been coming from the volcano.... read more.

7.4 quake hits off El Salvador coast followed by small tsunami


Central America was hit by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Sunday night, around 125 km off the El Salvador coast in the Pacific Ocean. A small tsunami followed.
The U.S. Geological Survey has said that a 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred south of Usulutan department in the southeast of El Salvador. The quake hit at a depth of 53 kilometers... read more.

Clowning around: 4th Annual Clown Congress in Guatemala City



The Fourth Annual Clown Congress has taken off in Guatemala City and its generating loads of smiles, as 200 clowns get together and have fun.
All serious matters are put on hold once a year in Latin America, when the annual Clown Congress is held.

No apocalypse is coming — another Mayan calendar has been found

Breathe a sigh of relief. Another Mayan calendar has been found and there is absolutely no mention of December 21, 2012.
Hidden deep in a Guatemala jungle in the 9th-century Maya complex of Xultun, experts have found a previously unknown version of the Mayan calendar. And according to the new find, Earth is going to be around for a very long time.
The ancient inscription that has been discovered is thought to be the oldest Mayan records to be found so far. Archaeologists say that it dates back around 1,200 years, which is at least 600 years older than previous examples found.
