Superstorm Sandy leaves thousands of dogs and cats homeless


In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, on top of the devastation to the city and the toll on the people in the area, thousands of pets from New York City and surrounding areas are missing.
While the storm raged, many people were parted from their pets. The Humane Society of the United States reported that around 15 million dogs, 14 million cats and 1.5 million horses were in the path of Hurricane Sandy's wrath.
In many cases, owners had to part with their pets when they evacuated their homes, while others tried to find accommodation where they could take their pets with them. Often the Humane Society collected pets for safekeeping, while the owners were evacuated to safety. But many were lost during the ordeal... read more.

Greece’s uncertain future — Short documentary (Video)



A short, 10-minute documentary, compiled by Brandon Jourdan and Marianne Maeckelbergh, introduces us to the current social crisis in Greece.
After six years of recession, the situation in Greece is looking increasingly dark. With widespread misery from austerity measures and budget cuts, unemployment and lowering of wages, contributing to the rise of a fascist party in Greece.
Jourdan and Maeckelbergh have compiled this short and informative documentary, showing scenes of the situation in Athens, and also interviewing many people on the state of the country, which has descended into an increasingly unpredictable situation.

Consumer groups document $45 million deception against Prop 37


Amid allegations of fraud by the No on 37 campaign, the US Department of Justice refers a complaint to the FDA about alleged fraudulent use of its seal in No on 37 campaign fliers, opposing GMO labeling in California.
Digital Journal reported on October 18 about the latest in a line of misrepresentations and possible fraud, and that California Right to Know was calling for a criminal investigation of No on 37 for misuse of the FDA Seal and a fabricated FDA quote, all in opposition to the labeling of GMOs.

Venice, Italy flooded with high tide and rain (video)


Venice has been inundated with high water levels since Thursday, due to a high tide. The city is on high alert as the water is not expected to recede for at least 15 hours.
While people are used to a lot of water in Venice, Venetians took to wearing high boots and using wooden walkways to wade through the streets on Thursday. Some shops and ground-floor apartments were flooded.

Haiti faces food crisis and cholera in wake of Hurricane Sandy


In the wake of the havoc caused by the super storm on Haiti, only now is the extent of the devastation making itself known. Haitians face severe food shortages and the threat of cholera.
While the UN is warning that the flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy is leading to unsanitary conditions, threatening a sharp increase in cases of cholera, aid workers are concerned that the extensive crop damage will lead to increases in food prices and shortages.

Hurricane Sandy's Caribbean trip — devastation in Haiti and Cuba


As the world concentrates on the latest devastation in the US, Sandy has already done some serious damage to other countries, including Haiti and Cuba. Sandy took the lives of 54 people in Haiti and 11 in Cuba.
While in the Caribbean area, Hurricane Sandy also killed two people in the Bahamas, two in the Dominican Republic, one in Jamaica and one in Puerto Rico. 

Total death toll in the Caribbean is 71, with tens of thousands made homeless and little money available to rebuild.

WikiLeaks releases Pentagon prison 'Detainee Policies'


Dubbed the "Detainee Policies", WikiLeaks has released over 100 classified documents which detail the Department of Defense procedures for running infamous prisons, including Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca and European US Army Prison facilities.
Directives and manuals which are part of the US military's policy for treatment of terror suspects and other detainees will be released chronologically over the following month, according to a statement by WikiLeaks.
