General strike in Europe on 14N - November 14 European action


There were literally millions of people out demonstrating on the streets of Europe yesterday in the largest European general strike ever held. One thing they all agreed on, "We have no future!" Includes videos.


In total, workers in 23 countries across Europe participated in the European Day of Action and Solidarity. As reported by Digital Journal on Wednesday, some actions were small and others were full-blown strikes. 
The Europe-wide strike action was coordinated by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and promoted on Twitter under the hashtag “#14N".. read more and watch videos.

Greece’s uncertain future — Short documentary (Video)



A short, 10-minute documentary, compiled by Brandon Jourdan and Marianne Maeckelbergh, introduces us to the current social crisis in Greece.
After six years of recession, the situation in Greece is looking increasingly dark. With widespread misery from austerity measures and budget cuts, unemployment and lowering of wages, contributing to the rise of a fascist party in Greece.
Jourdan and Maeckelbergh have compiled this short and informative documentary, showing scenes of the situation in Athens, and also interviewing many people on the state of the country, which has descended into an increasingly unpredictable situation.
The video discusses how Golden Dawn is infiltrating the police and gradually taking over the country, how people are trying to make things work by a system of barter and exchange, and how the people of Greece are trying to fight the fascist influences in their country.... as the video cannot be embedded here, please click here to view.

Video: MUTE — The visualization of an economic rape


Yiannis Biliris has created a short documentary which, with very few words, gives a clear picture of the current economic crisis in Greece. The video shows us that Greece's economic rape is turning into a social one.

Biliris was born in Athens, Greece in May 1980.
At a young age he began experimentation in filming and on graduating, attended a film-editing school. He has worked for several TV stations, editing live news and feature stories.... read more and watch short and very moving documentary.

No news from Greece as journalists rally prior to general strike



A news blackout was experienced on Wednesday as journalists walked off the job for 24 hours, just one day before the general strike in Greece.
There were no newspapers, the TV and radio stations halted news broadcasts, as hundreds of journalists, technicians and staff from television and radio stations and daily newspapers rallied with other professionals in the center of Athens on Wednesday.
The journalists carried anti-austerity banners and slogans saying, for example, “We want jobs, no more unemployment. We can’t live on starvation wages in the 21st century.”
At the same time, lawyers, pharmacists and doctors staged a similar peaceful protest in front of the Finance Ministry in Athens.... read more and watch video.

Athens protesters throw firebombs, police shoot tear gas (Video)


Protests have erupted into rage in Athens on Wednesday, as Greece shuts down with a 24-hour general strike over austerity measures.

Video: CCTV footage of arson attack on Microsoft in Greece


Police in Athens have now released CCTV footage of the arson attack on Microsoft's office in Greece, showing the arsonists forcing entry into the building.
Digital Journal reported on the armed attack on the offices of Microsoft on June 27.
The incident occurred after security guards were forced out of the building at gunpoint by the arsonists. The fire almost completely burnt down the main entrance of the building... watch video.

Magnitude-5.8 earthquake shakes southwest Turkey — 6 injured


Southwest Turkey was hit by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake today, which was also felt on the Greek Island of Rhodes and in Northern Cyprus.
According to local media, six people were reportedly injured after jumping from their balconies or windows in panic and are being treated in a local hospital.
Fethiye, a popular resort town in Mugla province, is the closest town to the epicenter of the quake, which was in the Aegean Sea. Tremors were also felt on the Greek Island of Rhodes, with no injuries reported, and the quake was also felt in Northern Cyprus... read more.

61-year-old pensioner hangs himself in Athens, Greece


In the continuing crushing austerity in Greece, yet another suicide has been reported. The 61-year-old could not carry on any longer.
The Athens Times has reported that the man's lifeless body was found hanging in a public park, not far from his home in Nikaia, Athens. A park attendant found the pensioner and also a suicide note which was in the man's pocket... read full story.

Video: TV host pelted with eggs & yoghurt for neo-Nazi interview


A Greek TV host decided to invite a member of the Greek neo-Nazi party to appear on his show the previous week. Leftist activists took revenge during his latest show on Friday.
Last week, Panagiotis Vourhas invited a spokesman of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party on to his show.
Members of the party have been accused of acts of hate crimes and violence against political opponents, ethnic minorities and also illegal immigrants in Greece. In recent polls, the party apparently has the support of more than 5% of voters.
On Friday this week on the private channel Epiros TV1 show, when interviewing a local politician he was attacked by a group of 17 activists, their faces hidden behind handkerchiefs. The intruders pelted the presenter with eggs and yoghurt and yelled their protest.... read full article
