'Project X Haren' causes mayhem in small Dutch town (video)

When inviting people to a birthday party on Facebook, it's a wise idea to keep the invitations private, as this small Dutch town suffered an onslaught of thousands of party goers on Friday night.
15-year-old Merthe Weusthuis posted a video invitation to her 16th birthday party on her Facebook page. However, she forgot to make the invite private, and her small town in the Netherlands was invaded by thousands of people on Friday... read more and watch videos.

John Unger: Schoep doing well after fifth laser treatment (video)

Schoep the dog, made famous by a viral photo on Facebook, is still undergoing laser treatment and his pain is greatly reduced. 'I almost got a bark out of him a few nights ago,' says Unger.
Digital Journal recently reported that Schoep, the now famous 19-year-old arthritic dog owned by John Unger, was undergoing laser treatment, thanks to the generous donations received after a photo of the two of them went viral on Facebook.
Unger and Schoep were captured in a beautiful photo by photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson of Stonehouse Photography, taking a therapeutic evening swim in Lake Superior. The warmth of the water soothed Schoep's pain and helped him to sleep... read more and watch video.

WikiLeaks revealed that the U.S. government is using surveillance cameras all over the U.S. to track people. An anti-censorship campaigner explains that not only do they use cameras, they are also tracking people on the Internet.
Digital Journal reported yesterday on the WikiLeaks release of more Stratfor files, relating to the TrapWire project.

Facebook to be sued for $15 billion in class-action privacy suit

Facebook had better do well on the stock exchange. It may need to money to pay off a class action suit on behalf of users who were tracked on the Internet by Facebook after logging out.
A 15-billion-dollar nationwide class-action lawsuit has been filed against Facebook in California. The allegations? Tracking Facebook users after logging out and also violating U.S. wiretapping laws.
ZDnet.com reports that the suit combines 21 cases filed across the U.S. of alleged privacy violations by Facebook and was filed on Friday in the Federal Court of San Jose. The plaintiffs are claiming that Facebook used cookies to track them across the Internet, after they had logged out of the social media network.... read full article.

Now residing in Singapore, Eduardo Saverin is giving up his U.S. citizenship. Seems he will have quite the tax saving due to this move.
Bloomberg is reporting that Brazilian-born Saverin (30) renounced his U.S. citizenship in September last year.
This move is apparently not out of the ordinary these days. RT reported some time ago that in 2011 alone, at least 1,788 Americans renounced their U.S. citizenship, which is more than the totals for 2007, 2008 and 2009 together.

High school principal accused of ‘spying’ on Facebook resigns

Turns out the principal may have had a false Facebook page with 300 friends, many from the same high school. This made it easy for her to spy on students' posts.
Interacting with students on social media networks, if allowed, requires caution and professionalism. Just as it would in a classroom situation.
However, in Clayton, Missouri several students and their parents apparently accepted a Facebook friendship request from one "Suzy Harriston". There was a nondescript profile photo, but the "person" apparently had more than 300 friends. Many of these friends were from Clayton High School, so people accepted the requests... read full article.

Video: 'CISPA pushed by spy & tech companies for profit'

David Seaman, journalist and host of The DL Show, talks in depth about the latest threat to internet freedom and privacy, The Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act, or CISPA.
RT interviewed Seaman in the video above and some valuable information has been passed on.
Recently U.S. Congress has attempted to sneak through legislation that could censor and change the face of the internet as we know it, all in the name of "national security."
Earlier in the year it was the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA), which threatened the free internet in the U.S.A., but a huge online and street campaign managed to put an end to both acts.
Now it is the Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act, or CISPA that is threatening the basic privacy of internet users, not only in the U.S.A, but possibly elsewhere in the world... read full article and view video.

U.S. Marine faces dismissal over criticism of Obama on Facebook

U.S. Marine sergeant Gary Stein made the mistake of criticizing President Barack Obama on his Facebook page. That mistake may cause him to be dismissed in shame.
Stein superimposed images of President Obama's face on to a poster advertising the movie "Jackass". According to his lawyers, he had done nothing more than exercise his right to free speech.
Captain James Baehr, a defense lawyer representing Stein, said: "We are truly surprised and disappointed but it was an honor to fight for a hero like Sgt. Stein and every other marine's right to speak freely."
Baehr also stressed that Stein had, in fact, not broken any existing law.... Read full article
