Tens of thousands march in the streets of Madrid, Spain


Angered by the latest austerity measures and budget cuts, and calling for the Spanish government to resign, thousands thronged the streets of Madrid on Saturday.

Students take to streets in protests throughout Spain


Amidst ongoing protests throughout Spain, thousands of students took to the streets in Madrid on Wednesday, angry at proposed education cuts which they say leaves them with "no future."

While thousands marched in Madrid as part of a three day action, according to local police, a further 3,000 rallied in the streets of Barcelona and thousands more protested in Valencia and other major Spanish cities.

Madrid protests: Indignados intend to return to the plaza today


After thousands protested in the Plaza de Neptune in Madrid on Tuesday, around 100 meters from the Congress building, police became violent and eventually cleared the square.
The indignados were calling for new elections and carrying banners with the slogan "No", referring to the austerity measures being taken by the Spanish government.
Protesters are saying that a government chosen by the people that, once it reaches power, does not keep it's promises, has no legitimacy. They say that winning an election does not give the government the right to act as it wants, betraying the voters who have elected it. Police attack 'Occupy Congress' protest in Madrid (Video)


A rally was held on Wednesday with thousands of Spanish indignados surrounding the Congress building in Madrid, in an action dubbed "Occupy Congress."
The indignados were calling for new elections and carrying banners with the clear slogan "No", referring to the austerity measures being taken by the Spanish government.

Spaniards march against ‘authoritarian’ austerity (video)


Tens of thousands of Spaniards hit the streets in Madrid on Saturday against brutal cuts and tax hikes imposed by the Spanish government.

Spain’s ruling party, the PP (People’s Party or Partido Popular) has created a new wave of public anger, over unpopular cuts to the country's public sector services. Millions of people protest in 80 Spanish cities (video)



On July 19, millions took to the streets in 80 major cities throughout Spain. Union workers, 15m members, the general public and many others let their voices be heard.
In ongoing protests countrywide, the largest demonstration since the global event on October 15, 2011, happened last night and over a million people hit the streets.
People involved in the protests included miners, firefighters, judges, public employees, the unemployed and even the army.
The largest workers' unions, UGT and CCOO, were there along with many other professional organizations, representing the miners, medical employees, firemen, public transport workers, teachers of all levels of education, feminist and pro-gay collectives, 15m sympathizers and from old and new political groups... read more and watch videos.

Madrid, Spain: 76 injured as protesters clash with police



It started with coal miners demonstrating in Madrid, then supporters joined them. Then Rajoy introduced more austerity measures. Then the cops stepped in with rubber bullets.
Digital Journal reported today on the coal miners' long walk to Madrid to protest against the austerity measures and cuts in the mining sector.

Rajoy announces latest austerity measures in Spain


As coal miners and other protesters converge on Madrid, Spain's Prime Minister announces the latest austerity measures, including a VAT increase.
Digital Journal reported earlier today that coal miners and supporting protesters are thronging the streets in Madrid. In latest news on this protest, Spanish police have fired rubber bullets at protesters in central Madrid today.

Spanish coal miners march to Madrid in anti-austerity rally


A group of Spanish coal miners, angered by the huge austerity cuts in government subsidies to the mining industry, walked for 3 weeks to meet in Madrid.
Digital Journal reported on June 20 about a group of protesting miners, who used home-made bazookas against the Spanish police.
There have been ongoing protests in several mining towns and villages in Spain, over the Spanish Government's plans to slash subsidies to the coal sector by over 60%. This would reduce subsidies from 301 million euro last year, to only 111 million this year. According to union officials, these austerity measures could jeopardize the jobs of about 8,000 coal miners and up to 30,000 other people indirectly employed in the mining sector... read more and watch video.

Stradivarius cello worth $20m damaged during photo shoot

The valuable cello was apparently damaged while being handled by experts during a photo shoot at the Royal Palace in Madrid.
The cello is part of a quartet of valuable instruments kept at the Royal Palace in Madrid, which includes two Stradivarius violins and a viola.
El Mundo newspaper (Spanish language) reported that the cello fell from a table during a photo shoot.
A National Heritage official has declined to say exactly what happened but did confirm that it occurred around three weeks ago. She spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with department policy... read full article.

Real Madrid to take the cross from its logo to please Muslims


Real Madrid, the Spanish football giants are making changes to the club's logo in order to strengthen their popularity among Muslim football lovers.
The logo has been their emblem for nearly a century, but now Real Madrid will be removing the small cross from the very top of the crown.
The Marca newspaper in Spain quoted a source in the football club's administration, who said that this move is aimed at “avoiding all forms of misunderstanding and conflict in the regions where the majority of the population is Muslim”.
For those unfamiliar with the soccer world, or football as it is called in Europe, Real Madrid can be placed on a par with other globally recognized professional sports franchises - for instance the New York Yankees or the Dallas Cowboys. Their annual reviews are over $500,000 and the team has an estimated net worth of almost $2 billion.
The change to the logo coincides with the start of construction on a $1 billion sports tourist resort in the UAE by Real Madrid. This will be the world's first theme park located on an artificial island. The park will combine both sports and tourism.... read full article.

Walking Gallery is run under the direction of Spanish artist José Puig, and presents another brand new route through the city of Barcelona, with a great number of participating artists displaying high quality work.
