General strike in Europe on 14N - November 14 European action


There were literally millions of people out demonstrating on the streets of Europe yesterday in the largest European general strike ever held. One thing they all agreed on, "We have no future!" Includes videos.


In total, workers in 23 countries across Europe participated in the European Day of Action and Solidarity. As reported by Digital Journal on Wednesday, some actions were small and others were full-blown strikes.

Tens of thousands march in the streets of Madrid, Spain


Angered by the latest austerity measures and budget cuts, and calling for the Spanish government to resign, thousands thronged the streets of Madrid on Saturday.

10's of 1000's hit UK streets in anti-austerity protest (video)


It was the UK's turn to hit the streets on Saturday in protest against austerity measures and budget cuts. Tens of thousands participated with a wide range of different groups involved.
Amidst cries of "Pay your taxes", more than 100,000 protesters poured into the streets of London, Belfast and Glasgow, angry at the Government's austerity measures which they say are killing Britain.
Protesters were blowing whistles, waving flags and banners, reading ‘Cameron has butchered Britain’, ‘cut war not welfare’, and ‘need before greed’.

Students take to streets in protests throughout Spain


Amidst ongoing protests throughout Spain, thousands of students took to the streets in Madrid on Wednesday, angry at proposed education cuts which they say leaves them with "no future."

While thousands marched in Madrid as part of a three day action, according to local police, a further 3,000 rallied in the streets of Barcelona and thousands more protested in Valencia and other major Spanish cities.

No news from Greece as journalists rally prior to general strike



A news blackout was experienced on Wednesday as journalists walked off the job for 24 hours, just one day before the general strike in Greece.
There were no newspapers, the TV and radio stations halted news broadcasts, as hundreds of journalists, technicians and staff from television and radio stations and daily newspapers rallied with other professionals in the center of Athens on Wednesday.
The journalists carried anti-austerity banners and slogans saying, for example, “We want jobs, no more unemployment. We can’t live on starvation wages in the 21st century.”

Thousands of Muslims tell Google take down 'Innocence of Muslims'


In ongoing protests over the YouTube video, "Innocence of Muslims", thousands of Muslims protested outside Google's UK headquarters, saying they now live in an "age of mockery".
Reportedly the video "Innocence of Muslims" is still available on YouTube in the United Kingdom, and around 10,000 Muslims have traveled to London from various parts of the country to protest against this.
This is the first of a series of organized attempts to demand that YouTube, which is a subsidiary of Google, take down the offending video, which has caused outrage worldwide. Protesters say that they will continue until their demand is met... read more and watch video of the protest.

All over the world people were banging pots and pans and generally making themselves heard on Saturday, in the popular "Global Noise" movement against austerity.
People of the world are sick of governments bailing out the banks, while the people are forced to accept budget cuts, austerity measures, unemployment and hunger.

Venice and Veneto region seeking independence from Italy (video)


First it was Scotland and Catalonia protesting for independence, now the people of Venice and the Veneto area of Italy also want to be separate, free and on their own.
Instead of being saddled with austerity by Rome, Venice wants to be free. Over 70% of residents in the area support the push for independence, according to the latest poll conducted by local newspaper Il Gazzettino, although a previous poll conducted by Corriere della Sera in September found that 80% were in favor.

Protests have erupted into rage in Athens on Wednesday, as Greece shuts down with a 24-hour general strike over austerity measures.

Police attack 'Occupy Congress' protest in Madrid (Video)


A rally was held on Wednesday with thousands of Spanish indignados surrounding the Congress building in Madrid, in an action dubbed "Occupy Congress."
The indignados were calling for new elections and carrying banners with the clear slogan "No", referring to the austerity measures being taken by the Spanish government.
Protesters are saying that a government chosen by the people that, once it reaches power, does not keep it's promises, has no legitimacy. Police in Antwerp, Belgium arrest 120 in anti-US protest (video)


200 Muslim protesters gathered in the city center of Antwerp on Sunday, protesting against the US-made film 'The Innocence of Muslims.'

Spaniards march against ‘authoritarian’ austerity (video)


Tens of thousands of Spaniards hit the streets in Madrid on Saturday against brutal cuts and tax hikes imposed by the Spanish government.

Anti-austerity demonstration in Portugal (video)


The streets of Portugal were filled with around 150,000 people on Saturday, rallying and protesting against a planned tax hike in the country.
Portugal's center-right government has recently announced a planned tax hike. Protesters made their opinions known in the streets of Lisbon and other cities of Portugal, chanting, "Out of here! Montreal students return to streets in protest over tuition hikes


Montreal students were back on the streets yesterday in their monthly protest against hikes in tuition fees, ahead of Quebec's general election on September 4.

Assange: Hundreds demonstrate support of asylum in Quito


Hundreds of people turned out in Quito, Ecuador yesterday to demonstrate their support of the country's decision to grant asylum to Julian Assange. UNASUR met on Sunday to discuss threats to Ecuador's sovereignty.

Op-Ed: South African revolution: Taking back South Africa 2012


The people of South Africa have had enough. Enough of the government, which gives them nothing. Enough of the corporations taking from their country, and giving nothing back.
On the "Taking Back South Africa!" website is the following statement:
"We are the people of South Africa of all different races, cultures and backgrounds. We came from a painful past of Apartheid only to realize that after decades of hard struggle, in 1994 in exchange for establishing a symbolic multicultural ‘democracy’, real control of our country was handed over to Western corporations. This led us straight from the frying pan and into the fire."

Thousands of Israelis join anti-government demonstration


Two separate protests were held in Tel Aviv on Saturday. One was an anti-government rally, protesting recent tax hikes and a possible strike against Iran, the other a movement for a universal IDF draft.
One group consisted of Israeli students, social activists and the country's movement for equality in military service laws. One of their unofficial leaders, Stav Shaffir said, “The time has come for an all out war. We must stand up and show that we know how to join hands when necessary… to continue to fight in order to save this place, which we love so much.” ... read more.

Anaheim protests continue with nine people arrested



Protests are continuing in Anaheim over the two recent officer-involved shootings that left two residents dead. At least nine arrests were made on Sunday.

Thousands protest Chinese patriotism classes in Hong Kong



Tens of thousands of students, teachers and parents were out on the streets in Hong Kong on Sunday, protesting against Chinese patriotism classes.
The public and pro-democracy activists say that these classes will brainwash children into supporting China's Communist Party.

10's of thousands march in anti-nuclear protest in Tokyo, Japan


Tokyo saw yet another huge protest on Sunday, as thousands rallied in the streets against the nuclear restart in the country.
