Video: Julian Assange addresses the UN General Assembly


Assange, founder of WikiLeaks addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday evening, in an event called "Strengthening Human Rights."
Assange spoke directly via a video link from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been holed up since June this year, firstly seeking and finally receiving political asylum from that country.
The "Strengthening Human Rights" event was hosted by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño, and this event gave Assange a platform to draw attention to his case and the importance of revealing the truth.... read more and watch video.

Video: Whistleblowers — Are they an asset or a liability?


Being a whistleblower means different things, depending on whether you are an asset to the U.S. government, or an embarrassing liability.
In the video, RT's Kristine Frazao states that before the Obama administration, the Espionage Act of 1917 was used a total of three times, to convict and persecute individuals who had been accused of spying on the U.S., with the last incident being in the 1950's.

'WikiLeaks will carry on despite crackdown on whistleblowers'


RT interviewed Kristinn Hrafnsson, an Icelandic WikiLeaks member, on the systematic crackdown on whistleblowers worldwide.
In this interesting interview, Hrafnsson, an investigative journalist in Iceland, explains why he joined WikiLeaks as a press spokesman, after the exposure of the banking corruption in Iceland.
He says in the interview, "Julian Assange was working in Iceland the winter 2009-2010. After that Wikileaks actually produced a tremendously important leak which exposed corruption within Iceland. It shed light onto why the entire banking system of Iceland collapsed in 2008. I met him in that period when he was in Iceland working on other things." ... read more and watch interview.

DoD whistleblowers left vulnerable to reprisals — Pentagon report

An internal report by the Pentagon states that reporting misconduct or waste of money might get U.S. military personnel punished.
The Department of Defense's unit which is supposed to protect whistleblowers is more likely to ignore this, according to a report that has surfaced recently.
The Washington Post has reported that according to the document, dated May 2011, officials in the Office of Inspector General (IG) of the Department of Defense have systematically disregarded the Pentagon's set rules, intended to protect whistleblowers... read full article.
