'Syria files' released by WikiLeaks

Julian Assange might be languishing in the Ecuadorian Embassy, but WikiLeaks is still active, and has announced the release almost 2.5 million emails relating to Syria.

Israeli Border Control officer caught on video kicking child

Caught on camera, an Israeli Border Police officer kicks a Palestinian child in the southern West Bank. Police have launched a probe into the incident.

The incident was filmed by a volunteer from B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, on June 29 in Hebron, in the southern part of the West Bank.

The video footage shows a 9-year-old Palestinian boy walking down the road, when a uniformed officer runs up to him and grabs his arm, causing the child to fall on the ground... read more and watch video.

The sky was lit by a magnificent firework display last night over Washington, DC, as the country celebrated Independence Day.

While an Oregon town canceled their firework display over concern about sea birds, and many Americans were without power on July 4, there was no shortage of light in Washington, DC.

European Parliament rejects ACTA

It is now official - the European Parliament has today rejected the draconian Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement in a plenary session.

Gunman takes hostages in Germany — 4 dead, some injured

During an eviction, the gunman has taken several people hostage, including the bailiff. Police believe that one person is dead.

Update:  It has now been confirmed by police that 4 people are dead.

In the south-western German city of Karlsruhe, court bailiffs were in the building to clear the property of occupants by court order. The gunman was facing eviction for non-payment of rent. The eviction was scheduled to take place at 09:00 (08:00 GMT)... read more.

London Symphony Orchestra to perform music made by computer Iamus

While computers have been used for years to make music, one developed by the University of Málaga composes music all on its own, and the orchestra wants to perform it.

The Iamus software was developed at the University of Málaga, Spain and requires no human intervention when making music.
