General strike in Europe on 14N - November 14 European action


There were literally millions of people out demonstrating on the streets of Europe yesterday in the largest European general strike ever held. One thing they all agreed on, "We have no future!" Includes videos.


In total, workers in 23 countries across Europe participated in the European Day of Action and Solidarity. As reported by Digital Journal on Wednesday, some actions were small and others were full-blown strikes. 
The Europe-wide strike action was coordinated by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and promoted on Twitter under the hashtag “#14N".. read more and watch videos.

Pilgrims evacuated after flooding around the shrine of Lourdes


Hundreds of Roman Catholic pilgrims, some sick and disabled, were evacuated from the shrine of Lourdes in France, as the Gave de Pau River overflowed from days of rain.
Lourdes is a famous shrine in France, where Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, in a grotto in 1858. The Catholic church recognizes 67 miracles linked to the shrine. Last year more than six million visitors traveled to Lourdes, with many disabled or sick people praying for a cure.  Read more and view video.

After GMO rat study: Russia suspends imports, France investigates


Following the recent rat study on NK603 GMO corn, Russia has suspended imports of Monsanto corn, while France continues investigations into the possible dangers of GMOs to human health.
On Tuesday this week, Russia suspended the import and use of Monsanto's genetically engineered corn, following the scientific study released on September 19 on rats fed with this corn, which caused serious health problems, including tumors and organ failure... read more.

'Beat the Blockade' — WikiLeaks open for donations via France


WikiLeaks is now open for donations, as they have found yet another way around the banking blockade by Visa and Mastercard, through a French non-profit.
On their website is a statement that a blockade by Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, Western Union and the Bank of America against donation payments to WikiLeaks, has been in effect now for 592 days.
The blockade was put in place after WikiLeaks published around 250,000 secret State Department cables in December 2010.... read more.

Germany and France say no more open EU borders — Schengen to end?

Germany and France are proposing a bill which may impose border security checks on EU countries. They wish to tackle rising illegal immigration problems.
The Schengen Agreement was signed in 1985 and it allowed EU citizens to easily pass from country to country within the Eurozone.
With the current open-borders system, illegal immigration from third-party countries into Europe has become a huge problem, especially during the economic crisis.
According to Reuters over 90% of illegal immigrants cross the Greek border with Turkey. From there, with no check points between Eurozone countries, it is easy for them to move around... read full article.

Video: Presidential candidate wants France out of Eurozone

Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, Gaulist candidate in the French presidential elections, says if elected, he wants France out of the EU bloc.

The French people are off to the polls today for the presidential elections with 5 candidates leading the polls. Current President Nicolas Sarkozy, the Socialist Party's Francois Hollande, the National Front's Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Melenchon of the Left Front and Democratic Movement leader Francois Bayrou are ahead in the race according to opinion polls on Friday.

However, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, who has formed the party "Arise the Republic", is still hopeful that he might get through.
