Pilgrims evacuated after flooding around the shrine of Lourdes


Hundreds of Roman Catholic pilgrims, some sick and disabled, were evacuated from the shrine of Lourdes in France, as the Gave de Pau River overflowed from days of rain.
Lourdes is a famous shrine in France, where Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, in a grotto in 1858. The Catholic church recognizes 67 miracles linked to the shrine. Last year more than six million visitors traveled to Lourdes, with many disabled or sick people praying for a cure.  Read more and view video.

Tornado hits Gandia, Spain fairgrounds injuring 35 (Videos)


Fortunately the fairgrounds were closed to the public at the time the tornado hit, but 35 workers were injured in the storm. More flooding and heavy rains were experienced in other areas of Spain.
The tornado struck the fairgrounds in Gandia, in the Valencian Community of Spain, knocking down a Ferris wheel and damaging several other rides... read more and watch videos.

Flooding in Senegal kills at least 6 (video)



Torrential rains in the African country of Senegal have killed at least 6 people, either by drowning or being crushed by falling buildings.
A spokesman for Senegal President Macky Sall, Abou Abel Thiam, said on Monday that the President has cut short his trip to South Africa, and was returning to Senegal, where he has ordered a full emergency response.

Another devastating flood hits southern Russia (video)


More floods hitting the south of Russia have killed four people, three are missing and around 1,500 have been affected. Three of the dead are said to be tourists.
Digital Journal reported in July on the floods which hit the Krasnodar region of Russia, killing 170 people and devastating the area.
Later in July, an article was published with a video, showing residents attempting to clear up the area and clean out their homes.

At least 12 people killed in landslides in the Philippines


Torrential rains triggered a landslide in the Philippine capital of Manila on Tuesday, killing eight people. One report states 51 dead. Four were buried by a mudslide in Zamboanga del Sur.
A landslide hit a row of shanties in a road in Manila's suburban Quezon City, killing eight people.
Emergency crews are attempting to rescue and evacuate tens of thousands of residents in the area, some of whom are stranded on the roofs of their homes... read more.

Video: Flood sweeps Fangshan district in Beijing, China


Heavy rain, recorded at 46 centimeters (18 inches), fell on Beicheying Village in Fangshan District, Beijing last Saturday. Questions are raised as to officials' response to the disaster.
Digital Journal reported on the heavy rains which fell in China on July 22, killing at least ten people.
Now a video has been released (above) of the flooding in Beicheying Village, located in Beijing's Fangshan District on Saturday, when China's capital experienced its heaviest rains in six decades.

Heavy rains in Beijing, China kill at least 10 people


In continuing heavy rains in China, Beijing has been inundated with torrential rains, killing at least ten and stranding 80,000 at the airport.
Digital Journal reported on July 15 on the flooding and landslides in southern and central China, where at least 21 people were killed.
Now, in one of the strongest rainfalls in over forty years, Chinese TV is reporting that Beijing has experienced flooding in the streets, killing at least ten people.... read more.

Continuing heavy rains hinder clean-up after floods in Japan


With fears of more landslides, the flood clean-up operation in Japan is being delayed. More torrential rains hit the country's south-west on Monday. Authorities are saying that if it rains again, clean-up work may have to be put on hold.
So far, rainfall in the hardest-hit Aso, which is located at the foot of a volcano in Kumamoto, has been measured at 81.7 cms (32.2 inches)... read more.

21 people killed in floods in China, millions evacuated (video)


Torrential rain, floods and mudslides have continued to hit urban and rural areas in southern and central China. At least 21 people have been killed.
China's state broadcaster, CCTV has reported that the continuing floods are forcing residents to evacuate.

Video: Cleanup underway in Krymsk, Russia


After the torrential rains caused massive flooding in the Krasnodar region of Russia, people are now trying to get their lives back together.
Digital Journal reported on the torrential rains, which caused flooding, landslides and mudslides in the southern resort region of Krasnodar.

260,000 people evacuated from flood areas in Japan (video)


As the death toll from floods and landslides in Japan rises to at least 20, around 260,000 people living in the affected area have been ordered to evacuate.
Digital Journal reported on July 12, on the record rains and mudslides in Japan. Since that date, the death toll has risen to at least 20 people dead.
Most of the dead were killed in landslides in and around the town of Aso, which is located at the foot of a volcano in Kumamoto prefecture. Kumamoto is one of 4 prefectures affected by the torrential rains and mudslides. Up to 67 killed in torrential floods in southern Russia (video)


Severe flooding, caused by torrential rains, has hit Russia's southern Krasnodar region. Up to 67 people have been killed in the popular resort area.
The floods were caused by torrential rains which came at night, without any warning. Local residents were caught by surprise, as the water flooded thousands of homes, and around 67 people have died.
