'Declaration of Internet Freedom' — to keep the Internet free


Many of the web giants and other organizations are joining together to sign a Declaration of Internet Freedom, to keep the internet free and open.
In the wake of SOPA and PIPA, and with CISPA and ACTA still threatening web freedom, several international organizations, including Amnesty International, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Mozilla and CREDO have signed the Declaration of Internet Freedom. The document calls for, among other things, Internet openness, access and privacy... read more.

US Senator renews call for Assange to be prosecuted for espionage


While Julian Assange is still holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy awaiting possible political asylum, a U.S. Senator has renewed calls for him to be prosecuted for espionage.
Senator Diane Feinstein of the Senate intelligence oversight committee has reiterated the view that the WikiLeaks founder has compromised America's security.
Feinstein said that, "Assange had knowingly attained and disseminated information which could cause injury to the U.S." and that he had "caused serious harm to national security and should be prosecuted accordingly." ... read more and watch video.

Video: Oil sanctions only hurting EU — Iran doing just fine


As at July 1, the EU embargo on Iranian oil is in place. The sanctions are aimed at pressurizing Iran to curb its nuclear program.
Digital Journal reported on June 26 that the Iran oil embargo would start on July 1.
According to Iran, these sanctions are not really a problem, as the country has been stockpiling money and goods as a buffer.
On Saturday, central bank governor Mahmoud Bahmani, told reporters that Iran is "easily" selling its oil despite the sanctions, as the U.S. has exempted some countries from penalties in dealing with Iran... read more and watch interview.

Japan restarts Oi nuclear plant despite mass protests


Despite massive protests in Tokyo, Japan's Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) has restarted the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui prefecture. Seismologists warn of the dangers.

Spectacular fireworks display plus protests in Hong Kong (video)


As Hong Kong celebrated the 15th anniversary of its return to China, a spectacular fireworks display was seen over the Victoria Harbor. On the same day, thousands of pro-democracy protesters gathered.
The incredible display was sponsored by the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and lasted a full 23 minutes, beginning at 20:00. Large crowds of people were there to view the event... read more and watch videos.

Video: Spanish fans celebrate Spain's win in Euro 2012


The Spanish team thrashed Italy 4-0 and naturally the crowds went wild. While cheers could be heard all over Spain, fireworks lit the skies in Kiev to mark the end of Euro 2012.

Op-Ed: Spain gears up for tomorrow's final in the Euro 2012


Despite being Saturday night, it's a quiet evening here in Spain. Everyone must be having an early night in hopeful anticipation.
Will Spain retain the Euro 2012 championship tomorrow? We will have to wait and see, when they enter Kiev's Olympic Stadium tomorrow evening to go head-to-head with Italy.

One thing is for sure, all thoughts of bail-outs and austerity will be on hold for a while.

Julian Assange movie: 'Leaks — Three Dates With Harry Harrison'


For something different in the way of movie entertainment, German and British movie makers are gearing up to make a romantic comedy about the life of Julian Assange.
Reports are stating  that the movie may be released under the title "Leaks - Three Dates with Harry Harrison" and will be based on the life of "the man who leaked the world."

6.3 magnitude earthquake plus mudslides from storms in China

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has rocked China's Xinjiang region, leaving 34 people injured. No fatalities have yet been reported. However, mudslides from storms have killed 50.

Evansville SWAT team raids wrong house in internet threat case


The SWAT team attempted to execute a search warrant on an anonymous Internet user, but destroyed the home of an innocent grandmother instead.
The SWAT team in Evansville, Indiana, dressed in full protective gear, wanted to make an example of an anonymous Internet user who made malicious remarks and threats against the police in Evansville.
On tracing the IP address involved, members of the Midwest town's SWAT team plotted their raid on the alleged home of the person behind the malicious remarks, posted on an Internet forum.
